History

• Tarsatica – Roman settlement on the territory of the present-day Trsat
• 1230. the name «Rijeka of St.Vitus» is being mentioned for the first time by Venetian merchants
• 1336.-1365. landlords of Rijeka are the Dukes of The island of Krk, later the Frankopans
• 1465. Rijeka was sold to the Emperor Frederick III of Habsburg and remained under Habsburg control until the WW1
• 1509. the city is plundered and burned to the ground and seized by the Venetians under the rule of Trevisano , the commanding officer
• 1531. the town gets the first written Statute
• 1595. The Turks have reached the Grobnik Field and fear spread through the town
• 1659. Emperor Leopold I. gives the city a coat of arms with two eagles whose heads are turned in the same direction and an inscription “Indeficienter» written below
• 1719. Emperor Charles VI proclaims Rijeka a free port
• 1779. under the rule of Maria Theresa of Austria Rijeka becomes Corpus Separatum. Ever since, most of the people of Rijeka are pro-autonomist
• 1848. Rijeka was put under occupation by the Vice-roy Josip Jelačić who dissolves the city government and establishes the Rijeka district
• 1868. Rijeka becomes Corpus Separatum – separated entity under Hungarian jurisdiction
• 1920. Rijeka is proclaimed Italian regency of Kvarner under the leadership of Gabriel D'Annunzio
• 1920. 12th November, Rijeka was made an independent state by the Treaty of Rapallo between Italy and the Yugoslav kingdom by which both sides agreed to “complete autonomy of The State of Rijeka (Fiume) and promised to comply with it forever”
• 1920. 24th-30th December, «Bloody Christmas», D'Annunzio forced to leave the city
• 1921 The Autonomy Party won the election by 6558 votes and National Bloc (fascist, liberal and democrat party) won 2442 votes. Riccardo Zanella, the president of the Autonomy Party becomes the MP
• 1922. the fascists performed a coup and legally elected government went into exile to Kraljevica
• 1924 A new treaty, signed at Rome awarded the city and district to Italy, leaving the suburb of Sušak to the Yugoslavs
• 1943. Rijeka and Sušak were occupied and held by the Germans until liberation in May 3, 1945.
• 1944. The Liburnian memorandum was published suggesting confederal state consisting of 3 cantons: Rijeka, Sušak and Bistrica. The islands of Krk, Cres and Lošinj would enter the joint condominium
• 3rd May, 1945. Rijeka was liberated from Germans
• 1947. According to the Peace Treaty held in Paris, Rijeka and Istra were once again reunited with Croatia within the framework of Yugoslavia
• 1962. city districts of Stari Grad, Sušak and Zamet are brought together with the district of Rijeka
• 1991. Croatia becomes an independent and sovereign state
• 1992. the municipality of Rijeka is abolished and The City of Rijeka develops with the districts Kastav, Viškovo, Kostrena, Čavle, Jelenje, Bakar and Kraljevica. Primorsko-goranska county is being formed.
• 2004. The Virtual Free State of Rijeka was found
